
The handler shall maintain and keep current a logbook documenting the training he/she has done with their canine. The logbook shall be checked prior to testing and shall contain at least six months of current training records.
The Physical Fitness requirements must be kept current, and the certification must be completed every 2 years. The handler shall complete the physical fitness evaluation as defined in the policies and procedures.
The handler shall pass and maintain a current certification in CPR and a First Aid training class or a RCSD BOD approved equivalent or a higher level of emergency response certification.
The handler shall maintain a daily search pack that he/she shall carry on searches. The required content is listed under Pack Requirements in the Policies and Procedures. It should also include items needed for the current weather conditions and winter equipment as appropriate. Handlers qualified for multi-day deployments shall maintain a 72-hour pack consistent with the environment’s needs.
The handler shall have knowledge and understanding of how to respond to and protect a possible crime scene. The handler shall discuss or define the following items to an RCSD Evaluator.
● Chain of evidence
● Protection of the crime scene
● Documentation of a crime scene
The handler shall be interviewed by RCSD Evaluator and asked questions regarding scent behavior.
The interview shall include the following items of discussion:
● Scent behavior near edge of lakes, streams, steep slopes, and conditions that lead to
inversion layers
● Factors that shall tend to extend or attenuate the scent such as sunlight, wind, humidity, etc.
● Factors that shall lead to chimney effect
● Factors that shall lead to discontinuous scent from the subject
● Factors that shall lead to looping scent from the subject.
● Strategies for placing area search canines on ridges/canyon floors to detect subject.
The handler shall be familiar with the “Standardized Emergency Management System/ICS”. The Handler may either successfully complete a class or pass a FEMA approved self-study course. Documentation of completed courses shall be turned into the Secretary and Vice President.
The handler shall take a course designed to prepare the team for an unplanned night out while
searching. The course shall include at least the following:
● Survival attitude
● Minimum gear
● Food/water issues
● Clothing
● Shelter Building
● Canine needs
